School Life – Sandpipers Year 3 & 4

sandpipersA warm welcome to all coming into the year 3 and 4 community. This is a very meaningful stage in a student’s progress – a time when they are in the middle of the school, with lots of exciting opportunities for work and play.

We have a demanding programme, following all the requirements of the school curriculum, but with no exams just yet so we have the opportunity to expand and develop the work we do in fun ways.

At Abbey Gate we have an open door policy and welcome feedback and suggestions at all times. If you have worries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Appointments can also be made to discuss anything in depth. We all want the very best for every child at our school.

Kingfishers Year 1

Kingfishers: Year 1 Pupils We would like to welcome you and your child to Year 1 and look forward to an exciting year ahead. We hope your child will enjoy their time in Year 1 and will build on the skills and knowledge they have learnt in Reception class.

Year 1 is the first year in Key Stage 1 and the children have many different routines and teaching styles to come to terms with after being in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The children will be introduced to a rich and exciting curriculum. They begin their weekly P.E lessons at the Northgate Arena, in addition to meeting many new topics and subject areas. They take part in daily literacy, Intense Jolly phonics and mathematics lessons, where they are taught at their individual level and challenged to their full potential.

Abbey Gate Prep SchoolThere is an emphasis on encouraging our young Year 1 children to become more independent, not just academically but also in looking after themselves, such as changing for P.E, tidying away their belongings and being responsible for their homework files, their library area and their desks and personal trays. This will prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead and support them in becoming well–rounded and confident individuals. We encourage all our Year 1 children to come into the classroom independently and take responsibility for organising their own belongings.

When your child moves into Year 1 they will be given reading books, weekly spelling tests and homework once a week. If there is anything else you need to know please make an appointment to come and see us.

Swans – Reception

At Abbey Gate Prep School we deliver an accelerated start to your child’s education; with a thorough grounding in the education skills involved in Literacy, Numeracy and Science leading to our Inspection stating “children make outstanding progress”.

Children begin to learn early numeracy skills and synthetic Phonics is used to teach early reading and writing skills. Children’s knowledge and understanding of the world begins to develop through the exploration of topic-based projects, trips, out of school activities and role play. Children continue to benefit from specialist teachers in music.

Our Christian ethos will encourage your child to welcome and respect children of all faiths and cultures. We use circle time to support children to express their ideas and emotions. This develops children’s confidence and self esteem.

Small class ratios enable us to give your child greater individual attention. Continuous and ongoing observational assessments enable us to ensure your child progresses at their own rate. Carefully planned activities appropriately facilitate their development and support their learning.

Parental involvement at this early stage in a child’s school experience is extremely important and therefore we welcome parents into school and keep them well informed about their child’s progress and well being.
